UG 4 Lecture Note

NOTICE TO ALL UG IV STUDENTS!!!
CHM 402: THEORY OF MOLECULAR SPECTROSCOPY
 
I am much delighted to welcome all of you to this great and challenging second semester of the 2012/2013 academic session. You are advised to please revise your previous Quantum Chemistry (CHM 403) and Applied Spectroscopy (CHM 316) lecture notes, before we start this course in few days to come. The syllabi were normalised to fit the minimun international academic standard for undergraduate students, and therefore cover the following key issues.
 
  • Background information on spectroscopy, including the mechanism of absorption and emission of radiation by atoms and molecules.
  • The key disparities between molecular and atomic spectroscopies.
  • Fundamental principle of translational spectroscopy of molecules in three dimentional axes.
  • Rotational spectroscopy:  From background information to details on moment of inertia, reduced mass and rotational energies of various classes of rigid rotors. The Erwin Schrodinger interpretation of rotaional motion and associated solutions taken into account x-y and x,y and z planes.
  • Vibrational spectroscopy: Details of the various vibrational transitions of molecules and associated energies. Erwin Schrodinger treatment of vibrational motion of molecules
  • Electronic spectroscopy:  Details of the various electronic transitions of molecules and associated energies.
  • Theories of selected spectroscopic techniques like FT-IR, XRD and ESCA.
